Braces have begun to be used to correct crooked teeth since 1955. The term "braces" refers to only one element of the bracket system - it is metal or ceramic plates that are glued to the teeth. In addition to braces themselves, such a system includes a metal arc, ligatures, springs, and many other elements ...
How many braces are -
The average duration of bite correction with braces is approximately 2-3 years. But with small changes of bite can last about 1 year. The optimal time to start correction of the wrong bite is from 8 to 14 years (at this age, the facial bones are still growing, which fits the movement of the teeth). In adults, the movement of teeth takes longer than in children.

How braces work -
A standard bracket system consists of 3 main components -
- braces (special plates that stick to the teeth),
- metal arc (with it, the braces are interconnected),
- the mechanism of fixing the arc in the groove of the bracket (using ligatures or locking mounts).
Braces work because they impart a constant slight pressure to the teeth. The pressure is created by means of a metal arc, which passes through each bracket and connects them to each other. In the course of treatment, the orthodontist will use metal arcs of various shapes and thicknesses, will weaken or tighten the ligatures more - all this allows you to change the degree of pressure on the teeth, achieving their desired position.
It must be said that not only the teeth themselves experience pressure, but the most important thing is the bone tissue around them. Under the test pressure in the bone tissue, the processes of bone remodeling (parallel resorption of the bone in the direction of tooth movement, and its formation behind the direction of movement of the tooth) are launched. This process is very slow, and therefore the treatment lasts a long time.
Types of braces -
All types of braces can be classified according to several parameters, for example, by type of material and by design features. We will describe in detail below about their pros and cons of each type.

How to choose braces -
We offer you a model of choosing braces, based on several points:
- first, to decide on an acceptable level of aesthetics,
- secondly - with the level of comfort, reliability and speed of treatment,
- thirdly - with a design (ligature or ligature),
- The fourth criterion is the cost of braces.
1. First, evaluate the acceptable level of aesthetics.
To choose the right braces - first you need to decide on the level of aesthetics that you expect from them. If you are not at all embarrassed by the fact that people will see them - feel free to choose metal braces that are fixed on the front surface of the teeth. Such braces are the most reliable and effective.
If you wanted braces to be less noticeable, then you have to choose between sapphire and ceramic braces on the one hand, and the lingual type of braces - on the other. Braces that are fixed from inside the dentition are called lingual (these braces are not visible at all).
There is almost no difference between sapphire and ceramic braces. The first are made of monocrystalline alumina, the second - of polycrystalline alumina. They differ from each other only by the degree of transparency. Ceramic - white opaque (they are suitable for people with a darker shade of teeth). Sapphire - translucent (they are more suited to the teeth of light shades).
2. Compare the different types of braces among themselves in terms of comfort, reliability and speed of treatment -
|Metal braces||Ceramic / Sapphire Braces||Lingual braces|
|Frequency of visits to the orthodontist||1 time in 2 months||1 time in 2 months||as needed|
|quick adaptation||quick adaptation||heavy adaptation|
|Treatment price||medium to high||high||extremely high|

3. Ligature braces and ligature braces - which one is better?
Ligature braces - they have special elastic bands or thin orthodontic wire as the mechanism for fixing the arc in the groove of the bracket (fig. 1-5,11,13). Ligature-free braces are also referred to as self-ligating braces; on their surface there is a special snap lock that securely holds the metal arc in the bracket bracket (Fig.12.14, gif).
Ligature-free braces: photo
Ligature-free braces can be made from metal, ceramics, and also from a combination of materials (for example, the body of the bracket is made of ceramics, and the groove of the bracket or lock is made of metal, as in Figure 9).
Types of ligature braces -
- "Victory", "SmartClip" and "Clarity SL" (Germany),
- "In-Ovation-R ", "In-Ovation-WITH", "In-Ovation-L " (USA),
- "Damon clear" (pic.14), "Damon Q", "Damon 3-MX" (USA).
If your doctor says that only unligated braces are suitable for you, then he is clearly disingenuous. The fact is that they correct the bite with such braces usually cost 2–3 times more expensive. And this price appears not so much because of the slightly increased cost, but primarily due to the fact that self-ligating braces are positioned in advertising as the most modern and most effective.
Comparison of ligature and unligature braces -
- The ease of changing the type of ligation (versatility) -
There is an active and passive fixation of the metal arc in the bracket groove (ligation type). Active fixation means that the arc will be tightly clamped in the groove of the bracket and will not be able to slide freely in it (Figure 15). With passive fixation between the arc and the bracket slot, there will be no tight contact and the arc will slide freely in the slot (Figure 16).
Why is it important?
In the process of changing the bite, the orthodontist at certain stages of treatment may need to first use one and then another type of fixation of the arc. For example, passive fixation is more suitable for removing the lingual or vestibular position or tilting of the teeth. Active fixation - for rotation of teeth around the axis, expansion of the dentition, etc.
When using ligature braces, the doctor, without hesitation, can change the system of fixing the arc from active to passive and back - simply loosening or tightening the ligatures. In the case of ligature-free braces, the design initially implies the presence of only one possible fixation system - either active or passive. This leads to the fact that the orthodontist sometimes has to treat the patient with non-optimal biomechanical loads on the teeth, which can lead to the fact that the treatment at some stage simply stops and / or complications develop.
- Number of visits for the correction of braces -
Manufacturers of ligature-free braces claim that the patient has less time to go to correction sessions. In fact, it often happens the other way around. When using ligature braces, there is no possibility to change the type of fixation of the arc (from active to passive and back), which may require the doctor to change the types of metal arcs more frequently.
- Use "less power" (safety of treatment) -
Manufacturers of ligature-free braces claim that the use of their braces leads to the possibility of using significantly less effort on the teeth needed to move them. This is a noticeable reduction in the friction force of the metal arc in the groove of the bracket, which leads to the possibility of reducing the forces. In this case, they give the results of their own research.
In fact, most independent studies that have been published in well-known peer-reviewed medical journals indicate that the frictional force of the arc in the groove of the bracket is almost the same in ligature and unligated braces. Example study: "Maxillary canine retraction with self-ligating and conventional brackets." The Angle Orthodontist: March 2011, (Vol. 81, No. 2, pp. 292-297).
- Price -
when you find out: how much it costs to put non-ligature type braces - perhaps you will even want to change your bite ... The cost of braces with installation: metal ligature braces can cost you only 35,000 - 40,000 rubles for 2 jaws. And the cost of unligated braces (for 2 jaws, with installation) - will be more than 100 thousand rubles.
- Hygiene convenience -
The big advantage of ligature braces is that when they are used, less space is created where food residues can linger. This is an important plus, especially for people with irregular oral hygiene.
findings: ordinary ligature braces systems are not only not inferior to unligated braces, but also skillfully alternating ligation methods (from active to passive, and vice versa) - in most cases they allow the patient to be treated more effectively. It is in view of the design flaws of modern ligature-free braces systems - many manufacturers began to make special “wings” on the ligature-free braces produced by them, which can be used to fix the arc with ordinary ligatures. Which, apparently, is a good confirmation of the fact that unligated braces at the moment is not very perfect.
A good advertisement for manufacturers of braces, not very high qualifications of orthodontists who, for the most part, do not want to go into the study of the biomechanics of different systems of braces, financial interest of orthodontists in raising prices for treatment ... All this makes self-ligating braces "the most modern and best" in quotes. But as soon as unligated braces will appear on the market with the possibility of changing the type of ligation from active to passive and back - such braces will really be a breakthrough in orthodontics.
Metal braces: reviews
Metal braces - this is the most common and most reliable type of braces. As a rule, they are made of stainless steel, gold-plated steel or titanium (the latter are used for allergies to nickel, which is part of the steel). Metal braces usually have the smallest sizes of all types of braces, but keep in mind that different manufacturers have slightly different sizes.
Metal braces are the least expensive when compared to sapphire, ceramic, and lingual braces, but they have a lot of advantages (see Table 2). Especially available ligature metal braces (Fig. 17) - their price will be 2-3 times lower than ligature (Fig. 18).
Ligature and ligature-free metal braces: photo
The only negative metal braces - they are clearly visible on the teeth. But you can give them individuality and make them colorful, using multi-colored rubber ligatures. And for the most fashionable it is possible to install braces in the form of hearts, flowers, soccer balls or stars. All the advantages and disadvantages of metal braces, see table 2.

Bracket Info: Frequently Asked Questions
How safe are dental braces?
As a rule, wearing braces is a safe procedure. However, wearing them complicates oral hygiene, which can lead to an accumulation of plaque and hard tartar. If plaque and stone do not take off in time - this is a hello to the development of caries and inflammation of the gums.
Secondly, the process of moving the teeth leads to the fact that the roots of the teeth become slightly shorter (the tops of the roots partially dissolve). The loss of the length of the root can lead to less stability of the teeth, especially in people who initially have a small physiological length of the roots.
What are the benefits of early treatment?
When correcting the bite, in most cases the patient goes through a stage where his upper incisors (temporarily) stick out. Such protruding teeth, especially in children, are most susceptible to injuries as a result of falls and bruises; moreover, it is not too aesthetic. Early treatment avoids this situation.
Also, the early correction of the bite allows the orthodontist to positively influence the growth of the jaw, the width of the dental arches, to improve the aesthetics and self-esteem of the child, to eliminate bad habits. The process of eruption of permanent teeth also improves due to the creation of a place for eruption (with its deficiency), the total time of orthodontic treatment and its cost is reduced, and the diction is improved.
